HISTORY MEETS TWITTER ON EASTER WEEKEND 2010

FEBRUARY 4, 2010 ST. ANSGAR, IA:

Twitter isn’t just for social networking anymore. An international Christian filmmakers forum is cooperating to launch Easter: A Twitter Reenactment. Tabitha Groleau heads up this expedition into the past: “Microblogging the story via Twitter isn’t new. But our carefully researched and imagined characterizations dig into a deeper dimension. ” Tweet by tweet, actors will imagine historical characters’ journeys in Twitter-sized spurts over Easter weekend.

Is 140 characters per message enough? Spokeswoman Jenni Noordhoek is positive. “We intend to imitate real tweeting. This means short and to the point, both monologue and dialogue. You will be able to see directly into the thoughts of the characters as well as their discussions.”

Head writer Rachel Petersen explains how she decided to weave the theme through the script. “We’re asking ourselves – how did the characters feel?  What emotions followed them through the darkness – and into the light?  How did the events impact their lives?” Calix Reneau, actor for the disciple Simon Peter, adds, “We are aiming for a personal look at the familiar story. If someone sees our reenactment and becomes more interested in the truth behind it, then we have done well.”

What makes this experience unique is the impromptu imagination behind the tweets.  Each actor has a time-line and a bio for their character, but the actual tweets are composed on-the-spot, in the emotions of the event. As a supportive historical basis, the Biblical text will be tweeted alongside the character tweets. “Imagination is all well and good, but historical accuracy must be kept,” Noordhoek reminds.

The stage is set. Easter is fast approaching. And the reenactors at Christianfilmmakers.org are at the ready. Watch the drama unfold April 1-4, 2010.
